Piece By Piece: A Recap Of Life In Pieces, Episode 4
A weird ex-fiancé, an uncomfortable golf game, and a bunch of boogers are no match for the Shorts.

On Episode 4 of Life In Pieces, we saw the Short family deal with a slew of uncomfortably hilarious incidents. From Matt's awkward last meal with Colleen's ex-fiancé to John's unique plan to hijack Tim's stellar golf game, there's no situation too difficult—or embarrassing—for this tight-knit clan to tackle.
Here are four particularly interesting moments from the fourth episode:
1.) Matt tries to find closure with Colleen's ex-fiancé, Chad
Last time we saw Chad (Jordan Peele), he was having a pret-ty hard time dealing with the breakup. Now, as Matt and Colleen grow closer, we learn Chad is willing to give the new couple some space, but that's only because he's about to go to prison for tax evasion.
Before he turns himself in, he makes one last request: to have sex with Colleen. When that's brutally rebuffed, he settles for one last meal of tamales with Colleen, her grandmother, and, of course, Matt. After a stressful feast, it looks like Chad is ready to face the music, turn himself in, and spend some real "me" time figuring out where he went wrong.
You know what they say, though—looks can be deceiving.
2.) Greg gets caught in the middle of his wife and his mother
As the baby of the Short family, it's easy to see why Greg has a special place in his mother's heart. However, now that he's a father himself, Joan hasn't had the easiest time easing up on how low she hovers, especially around his wife, Jen, who feels like the clan's matriarch is overly critical of her parenting skills.
With a nudge from Jen, Greg delicately approaches his mom and asks her to loosen the reins a little and allow his new family—coughJencough—to find a parental groove. While Joan seemed to take the suggestion in stride, old habits are hard to break—especially when tummy time is involved.
3.) When in doubt, always let John win
It started innocently enough when all the Short men—Greg, Matt, John, and Heather's husband, Tim—decide to hit the greens for a relaxing round of golf. However, when Tim starts playing the round of his life, the day goes from fun to fiery.
Impressed by his own success, Tim tells the others, "You guys need to play with my balls. I think they're lucky!"
John doesn't have any interest in Tim's balls, but he does offer a different—and completely unexpected—sign of support that ends up leaving his son-in-law scratching his head and whiffing his shot.
4.) Sharing is caring, but not for Sophia and Samantha
Having recently moved to a different house, Heather's daughter, Sophia, is having some trouble settling in to the family's new digs. The biggest adjustment? Not sharing a room with her older sister, Samantha, who was hardly touched by her sibling's sentiment because of an unsettling new habit Sophia has developed—picking her nose and wiping it on the bed sheets.
Gross, right?
However, turns out Sophia isn't actually digging for gold because she misses her sister or their old house. It's because she accidentally lodged a peanut up there. Poor kid!
