What is 1923 Season 2 about?

In Season 2 of 1923, a cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business to Jacob (Ford) and Cara (Mirren) back at Dutton ranch. With harsh conditions and adversaries threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer (Sklenar) embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana. Meanwhile, Alexandra (Schlaepfer) sets off on her own harrowing trans-Atlantic journey to find Spencer and reclaim their love.

What is the relationship between the Duttons of 1923, and the Duttons of 1883?

Like 1923, the limited-run drama 1883 is a Yellowstone origin story (all episodes now streaming on Paramount+). And, yes, both shows are centered on characters named Dutton. If you want to know how the Duttons of both shows are related, then read the next paragraph, but – spoiler-alert warning! – be advised that MAJOR 1883 and 1923 plot points will be discussed. Okay, here goes …

Spoiler alert: 1883 tells the story of James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) as they and their family journey west from Texas to Montana. In the first-ever episode of 1923, titled "1923," James and Margaret's daughter Elsa (Isabel May), who dies in the finale of 1883, but serves as narrator here, tells us Jacob is James' brother. She establishes that James passed away following the events of 1883, and that, upon James' death, Margaret wrote to Jacob, and pleaded with him to come to Montana. “A year later," Elsa says, "[Jacob] arrived to find my mother frozen in a snow drift, her two boys half-starved and barely able to speak." Margaret's "two boys," who are subsequently raised by Jacob and Cara, are John and Spencer, played by James Badge Dale and Brandon Sklenar, respectively in 1923.
